OPTOMETRIC INSTITUTE and CLINIC OF METROPOLITAN DETROIT

Optometric Institute and Clinic of Metropolitan Detroit (OICMD), located in the lobby of the Cadillac Place, is one of the only specialized nonprofit eye facilities in Michigan. The clinic is partially funded by United Way for Southeastern Michigan.

“Since 1968 our agency has prospered, due in part from community support. That support has allowed us to deliver the much needed eye care to residents of Southeastern Michigan,” says new executive director Thomas Armstead.

OICMD leads the way in serving families who lack access to basic eye care including the homeless, uninsured, under insured and to those who are unemployed. The clinic also acts as a referral source for optometrists and ophthalmologists when specialized eye care is required.

“Our special needs clinics (Geldhof Low Vision Clinic, Communications Clinic, Racki Glaucoma Diagnostic and Treatment Department, Retino-Vitreo Clinic and Contact Lens Clinic) work with numerous United Way agencies in addition to the Michigan Commission for the Blind and Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS). The clinic is open to the general public as well. “Patients fortunate enough to pay for services help us fuel our mission of helping numerous people in need,” adds Director of Clinical Affairs, Dr. Bernard Miller.

OICMD partners with numerous medical facilities including the Cabrini Clinic, Mercy Health Care Center, St. John Health Center, Herman Kiefer Health Center and the Kresge Eye Institute to provide medical and vision services for those without insurance. The Cabrini Diabetic Program has provided this most valuable care and has literally saved dozens of our neighbors’ eyesight. The program stresses early intervention with diabetic eye examinations and also includes laser photocoagulation for vision threatening cases.
